Chocolate 7-Pot
Description
The Chocolate 7-Pot pepper is a superhot chili pepper variety, which is a color variant of the original 7-Pot pepper. It gets its "Chocolate" name from its rich, dark brown color when fully ripened, unlike the standard 7-Pot which typically ripens to red.
The name "7-Pot" (or "7-Pod" as it's sometimes called) comes from the claim that one pepper is hot enough to spice seven pots of stew. These peppers originated in Trinidad and Tobago.
Key differences between the Chocolate 7-Pot and other 7-Pot varieties include:
Appearance: The Chocolate 7-Pot has a distinctive dark brown to chocolate color when ripe, compared to the red of traditional 7-Pots or the yellow of the Yellow 7-Pot.
Flavor profile: The Chocolate 7-Pot typically has a richer, slightly sweeter, and more complex flavor than the standard 7-Pot, with some describing it as having fruity undertones beneath the intense heat.
Heat level: While all 7-Pot peppers are extremely hot, the Chocolate variant is often considered to be among the hottest, with Scoville Heat Units (SHU) typically ranging from 1,000,000 to 1,800,000, which puts it in the same category as the Carolina Reaper and Trinidad Scorpion.
Growing characteristics: The Chocolate 7-Pot plants often have darker stems and leaves compared to other varieties, and the peppers themselves develop their chocolate color as they mature.
